Schools

The Houston County school system serves over 18,000 students and maintains a staff of professional and additional non-certified personnel totaling over 2,000. The average pupil-teacher ratio is 22-1. Other impressive statistics show that the average daily attendance rate is 95.6 percent and the dropout rate applies to only 1.6 percent of all students. Schools in the county have frequently been recognized as learning centers of excellence. The program offers outstanding programs geared to gifted students and to the needs of students with disabilities.

All schools are fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and system test scores are consistently above state and national averages. There are a total of 18 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 4 comprehensive high schools and 2 alternative schools designed to meet the needs of at-risk learners.

Fifteen of the system’s schools have been designated Georgia Schools of Excellence and two schools, Warner Robins High School and Houston County High School have been named a National School of Excellence.

The system’s strong elementary instructional program is enriched by art, music and physical education specialists at each school. The middle school program features interdisciplinary team teaching in academic areas and a wide range of exploratory course offerings. The high school instructional program allows students a choice of two programs of study; college preparatory or vocational-technical. Advanced Placement courses, Post-secondary Options and College Joint Enrollment is available at the high school level.

Macon College

Through the Robins Resident Center, Macon College has proudly supported the U.S. Air Force mission at Robins Air Force Base for more than 27 years. The RRC was established by the University System of Georgia under the administration of Macon College in 1970.

The College offers Air Force military and civilian employees a unique opportunity for personal growth and career advancement. With the opening of the Warner Robins Campus in the advanced Technology Park, Macon College now provides over 1,200 students with access to public higher education in Houston County.

Macon College is an academic institution which emphasizes programs leading to the bachelor’s degree. Students can choose from a wide range of transfer programs from Business Administration to Engineering and from Nursing to Education. Course credit is transferable within the University System and to other accredited public and private colleges across the nation.

Middle Georgia Technical Institute


A unit of the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education that serves a four county service area of Houston, Dooly, Peach and Pulaski Counties. MGT performs three major functions to include Adult Literacy Services, Economic Development Programs and Diploma and Certificate of Credit Programs. The 83 acre parcel at the corner of Houston Lake Road and Cohen Walker Drive is the site for 3 buildings totaling more than 163,000 square feet which houses a state-of-the-art media center, library and auditorium. Plans are underway to add nine more diploma programs which will be predominantly aerospace, aircraft and medical related.

Middle Georgia College

The oldest two-year residential college in the nation, a 33% enrollment increase has taken place over the past five years. This is an approved College for the Regent’s Engineering transfer program with Georgia Tech and approved for Medical College of Georgia’s early-acceptance program. It has intercollegiate teams in baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, tennis and football and four of the athletic teams have been ranked nationally in the top ten.
